Delicious Chinese Restaurant – Kingsford NSW Restaurant Review

I’ve been watching The Brothers Sun, part of a recent (and welcome) push by Netflix to get more Asian-American content on screen, and one of the jokes that they made early on was about a restaurant named the “#1 Seafood Restaurant,” which may or may not be the number 1 seafood restaurant of their local area. Named in a similar vein, Delicious Chinese Restaurant just happens to also be quite as delicious as it is advertised to be.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a combination bean curd hot pot (?$25) that I’ve not liked. It’s just one of the best things ever – so warm and comforting, always with such soft fried tofu and an assortment of meats and vegetables. This one was a bit heavier on the garlic than I’m used to, but still good overall. Good with rice.

The Hokkien Fried Rice was also very good. Great with combination bean curd hot pot once you’re done with the topping it comes with.

I think the salt and pepper pork chops were a bit more floury than they absolutely had to be, but they tasted good, and that’s what was important to my partner. I would’ve liked just a little bit less batter, but what can you do?

Overall a good option for a succulent sit down Chinese meal, in a formal restaurant that’s also fine catering to couples or solo diners, Chinese or otherwise. I think the next step for Chinese restaurant dominance would be to have actual photos on their menus.

MC Golden Tower – Haymarket NSW Restaurant Review

One of the first meals my partner and I shared together back in 2012 was at Market City’s food court, where we piled as much food as we could onto a plate of fixed surface area, and I watched in adoration as she finished all of the food when I could not.

I took her back to Market City when I proposed to her to try and relive this experience. Sadly the exact restaurant from 10 years ago was either unidentifiable or nowhere to be found, but MC Golden Tower (officially just “Golden Tower” post their renovation) seemed an appropriate substitute.

There was no self-serve on this visit, and it’s highly possible that this particular restaurant has never offered that at all. We had a number of choices (2 or 3 for a set price) served by the shop clerk with an experience somewhat marred by poor communication even though we do speak some Chinese between the two of us. Our choices of braised eggplant and soy chicken were honestly quite good for this hyper-cheap food court meal, though I wasn’t a huge fan of the fried rice which I felt was a bit wet and sticky compared to gold standard fried rice.

The New Dong Dong Noodles – Kingsford NSW Restaurant Review

It pains me to not be able to write a proper review for The New Dong Dong Noodles in Kingsford, it having been almost a year since I last had their food.

The overall theme for this restaurant was good quality, authentic Chinese food at good prices. I will provide you with some photos of takeaway meals but unfortunately not much commentary.

I’m a big fan of Hokkein fried rice ($17.80), and The New Dong Dong does it well.

The brisket in the beef brisket and dumpling dried egg noodle soup ($16.50) was plentiful and authentic, though I was not a fan of the egg noodle’s flavour themselves.

I think this Shandong (Shan Tung) chicken ($19.80) was OK, though I have had both better and worse.

I’ve never been able to keep my girlfriend away from salt and pepper pork chops ($18) and The New Dong Dong Noodles’ were no exception.

The beef with egg gravy and fried rice ($16.30) was good with good flavours, though I think the balance would’ve been better with just a little bit more topping or just a little bit less rice.

CONCLUSIONS
Overall, very good and very satisfying place to order Chinese food from in the Eastern Suburbs.

Old Town Delights – Mascot NSW Restaurant Review

OLD TOWN DELIGHTS is a Thai restaurant in Mascot with a very focused but delicious menu consisting of only a few choice options.

The interior of the restaurant is a strange layout of a few tables for dining in and a couch for those waiting for their takeaway orders. There is a string of televisions behind the counter, but only one was on, playing YouTube videos of acoustic guitar music. There are also two electric guitars and an amplifier – not being skilled in music myself I did not try them.

Old Town Delight’s traditional duck noodle soup ($15.90) was excellent. The soup had a really deep, rich, umami flavour thanks to its inclusion of an array of Chinese herbs. The noodles themselves were surprisingly tasty, having been infused with some of the same flavours that makes this dish so great. There was a generous serving of gai lan and bean sprouts which added a degree of freshness to contrast with and complement the soup’s flavours. Unfortuantely the soy duck leg itself wasn’t really great – I felt it was a bit too lean and dry, but the beef balls that came with the soup were delicious. Despite the duck being a bit disappointing I can definitely recommend this dish. Absolutely wonderful flavours.

The spicy fried rice with chicken ($13.50) was also very good. It had a bit of pad kee mao quality, with basil and chilli flavours mixed into the rice. The chicken pieces were quite thick and juicy. I had a few mouthfuls in the restaurant fresh, and a few around 4AM that night at work and the food maintained its good quality despite microwaving.

THOUGHTS
Old Town Delights in Mascot is an absolute hidden gem. Both dishes I had were really good, and I would readily recommend them to a friend or colleague.

Wallabies Thai – Mascot NSW Restaurant Review

Wallabies Thai is one of our local Thai places. It offers eat-in, takeaway, and delivery service. We decided to try eating in after seeing it pop up on Ubereats one too many times.

The money bags (4 for $8.90) were enjoyable but nothing to write home about.

No major complaints from us for the mixed entree (5 for $8.90), although I remember not really liking the curry puff.

The garlic fried rice was really good. Huge amounts of garlic inside, and giant portion.

The biggest disappointment of the meal was the laksa noodle soup ($15.90). I can’t recommend it.

The following are from a more recent delivery order from Wallabies Thai.

The BBQ Chicken (Boneless) ($15.90) was quite good. The chicken was tender and juicy, and nicely flavoured. I like the addition of the vegetables which included broccoli and capsicum, as I wasn’t expecting them. These vegetables were bathed in the delicious chicken juices.

The special wing ($14.90) of chicken in thick garlic sauce was tasty however suffered from the having of wing tips. This made it a bit difficult to eat, and I always feel like it’s low yield to include the tiny, low-meat wing tip with a meal.

My partner was a big fan of the pad see ew with roasted duck ($19.90). We’re normally more of a pad kee mao family, however we ventured outside of our comfort zone and were rewarded.

I can whole heartedly recommend Wallabies Thai, for either eat-in or delivery. Their prices are excellent and their food delicious. Eat in service is also very fast. A local gem.
