天天好日子 香辣小海虾 Tiantianhaorizi Spicy Shrimp – Grocery Review

Around 4 years ago, I had a delicious fried prawn head snack from the Korean grocer in Strathfield Plaza. It was crispy, crunchy and umami. Not getting the name nor the photo of this snack was one of the regrets of my life, and though I suspect it was from Jung Sae Woo, I have never again seen it for sale.

Today I came across what appeared to be a similar snack at a local Chinese grocer. This packet of deep fried spicy shrimp was only around $2, and so relatively low risk to try. Unfortunately they ended up being not very similar to what I remember of the Korean shrimp. These Chinese spicy shrimp were not just the head but the full animal.

They had a sticky exterior coating which meant that they were a bit softer rather than truly crispy. The stickiness of the coating made the snack seem sweet even though the flavour of it wasn’t particularly sweet – more of a spicy with a little bit of numbing and a bitter aftertaste

I didn’t really enjoy these as much as I had hoped, although my orange cat did enjoy one (and he will probably therefore die).

I wouldn’t get these again.

Sanlip Custard Soboro Bread 카스타드 소보루 – Grocery Review

One of the important functions of this site is for me to remember what I don’t want to eat again, and this Samlip custard cream soboro bread bun was particularly bad and uninspiring.

It featured a semi-pineapple bun like exterior, however was damp and soft and not at all crispy or craggly.

The bread had a slightly bitter flavour and the custard filling was in reality much less substantial than what was pictured on the packaging.

I truly could not recommend this. Ever. Please avoid it.

Bestore Angus Crispy Beef (Spicy Flavour) 良品铺子 澳洲 安格斯薄脆牛肉香辣味 – Grocery Review

This beef jerky was very thin and crispy, with a natural-tasting beef flavour, a little salt, but not much else in terms of seasoning – generally flavoured in more of a Western style compared to most Chinese jerkies. Allegedly spicy but imperceptibly so.

The thinness, allegedly at 1mm a slight, I thought was a bit overboard, in that it actually became sharp enough to be uncomfortable when poking the oral mucosa.

For these reasons I wouldn’t get it again.

Bestore Braised Pork Jerky  良品铺子 醇香老卤肉干 – Grocery Review

I’m posting this outside of the usual posting order because I have nothing particularly meaningful to say about this pork jerky.

I remember eating it, and I remember thinking that I wouldn’t want to eat it again. I’m simply posting to remind future me of this.

Why does my local Asian grocery store not stock Kirbat?

Daliyuan Pie 达利园·派 巧克力味涂饰蛋糕 – Grocery Review

I truly cannot believe how terrible this is. It is so dry and crumbly, too sweet, similar in quality to Ülker Halley’s (Turkish) variant, and overall inferior to both competing choco pie products from Orion and Lotte.

The worst part was that I had to buy a whole bag of them. 10 for $6, even more expensive than Lotte, and coming close to Orion prices.

The Chinese domestic market simply cannot compete in some regards, which explains why I’ve never seen this in Australia before now, and will never buy it again.

The Koreans simply do it better.
