Muthu Curry Restaurant – Toongabbie NSW Restaurant Review

We’ve been alternating between Circa and unexciting local cafes within walking distance of work for the past 5 years, and so it was very cool for us to go to a completely different Western Sydney restaurant for a completely different kind of Western Sydney breakfast this past Monday morning after night shift.

We had a bit of an omakase cultural immersion experience, led by our Tamil friend and colleague, for whom Muthu Curry Restaurant has been a frequent haunt ever since his university days. That is, he picked, we ate. Read on to discover what little I understood of the delicious things we had.

We started with some fried foods from the hot fried food counter. I know not what these are – I can only relate them to what I know, which is to say that they were similar to spring rolls or egg rolls on the outside, but filled with potato and proteinaceous filling on the inside. Google tells me these are known as ‘short eats’ or ‘Chinese rolls’. I cannot independently verify.

The different fillings were all pretty similar, and we were able to sample some with fish, mutton, and pure vegetable. Were it not for the discrete chunk of meat in the mutton, I would have thought it identical to the ones without. They were fine. They were not bad. But they were so similar to each other that were it not an omakase experience needing to cater to several different levels of meat and non-meat eaters, I wouldn’t get a bunch of different ones.

We had two dosas that looked externally identical, and so only one photo is provided above. They were served with what was described to me as a selection of sambal, curry dip, and white curry.

Diving into dosa, the paneer dosa ($12.90) was excellent, with a mild creamy paneer filling, a light and slightly crispy pastry, and of course the three flavourings to eat the dosa with. It’s just incredible what they can accomplish in taste, size, and variety, for the price.

The keema dosa ($14.90) had some meat in it, which was fine, but really the paneer dosa is the one to get here. Given the meat was in chunks it was also harder to ensure that each mouthful had some filling, whereas the paneer was more homogeneous and spreadable.

We also had two plates of egg roti and curry. The first to be discussed is egg roti ($8) with lamb curry ($10) and dal. The egg roti was mild – egg sandwiched between layers of soft, non-crispy roti – and a perfect spongy vehicle to soak up both the dal and the curry sauce. The lamb was appropriately tender, non-gristly, though did not excite.

The same dish but with chicken curry ($9) was much more fruitily spicy and exciting, though I guess it was important to have both the flavours.

This is going to sound really uncultured but I prefer prana chai made in my kitchen to this masala chai ($3) that was probably made in the proper art and way.

Overall
We had a lot of food for just $16 per person for a group of five, and I enjoyed the meal overall, even though they didn’t have the kothu roti that I was originally keen on (they only start kothu roti around noon). I’d definitely come back, or otherwise go to a different local restaurant in the area.

Bear Brasserie – Westmead NSW Restaurant Review

I’m surprised I don’t already have a post up about this place – I recall with some degree of certainty having an expensive but absolutely massive plate of nachos for breakfast after a run of night shifts back in 2021, a similarly massive meal of a burger and chips in a subsequent year, as well as a lamb wrap earlier this year.

I won’t write about those out of respect for the fact that there’s no way that I could even pretend to remember details about a meal eaten as a first year registrar – that’s why this blog exists, after all. What I do want to tell you about today is the secret, off-the-menu item known as the “kid’s meal“.

This Kids Cheese Burger ($12), an off-menu wonder features a very basic cheeseburger with a beef patty, slice of American cheese and some tomato sauce between a seeded bun, and an ample helping of freshly made fries. Those who frequent this establishment will have become wary of their gigantic servings of mains and chips with every order, and yet we find that the simple kid’s meal provides an adequate portion for adults of most shapes and sizes.

There’s nothing particularly kiddy about the Kids Chicken Schnitzel ($12), which again is a delicious, normal amount of food, that can fill up your average adult, especially if they are on a GLP-1RA. The schnitzel comes out fresh, juicy, and piping hot, as do the chips. Ask for a side of tomato sauce in your order notes and enjoy it in front of your workstation whilst discharging patients if you dare. You may be rewarded.

Order via the phone or the website if you don’t want to face the shame of ordering a kid’s meal in person.

Pasticceria Tamborrino – Five Dock NSW Restaurant Review

We pre-ordered online and subsequently picked up in person a cake from local bakery Tamborrino, taking the opportunity to try a few quick snacks whilst we were there.

The REASON FOR VISIT was this ricotta and pear semifreddo (around $40). Semi-freddo as a concept is not something that we’re particularly familiar with, and we were told to keep this out of the fridge for 3 hours prior to serving. Due to poor planning on our part, we consumed this cake after only 90 minutes at room temperature, by which point it had devolved into extremely soft, almost custard like texture. Being non-Italian and not having had any semi or full freddo before, I wasn’t sure if such a degree of softness was intentional, but it certainly did not help with the cake’s overall overpowering sweetness. Though sacrilegious as it may be, I think this would’ve been much better eaten straight out of the freezer, giving it a bit more structure and muting the sweetness just a little bit.

I should admit that I did enjoy the little gold encrusted cereal balls, which were a bit chewy and a bit crunchy. Despite this, this was one of the few occasions where I actually preferred the backup cake from Savoy, the classic taro cake, that is always present at such events.

Though I didn’t love the main event, I did quite enjoy this ricotta mini cannoli ($~4 or less). We had made a separate trip some months ago to Mezzapica in Leichardt to get their allegedly very good cannoli, but I honestly don’t think Tamborrino’s was any worse – possibly even better. We had been lured to Leichardt on the promise that Mezzapica’s cannoli would be extra crispy due to their piping to order, but to be honest Tamborrino’s cabinet cannoli crisped just fine. Unlike the other things we had from Tamborrino, the cannoli was not too sweet.

The other little snack we had was this pistachio mini bomba ($4) – essentially a donut filled with an absolutely huge amount of pistachio filling. This, much like the cake was also quite sweet. But somehow more enjoyable – perhaps due to its small size.

Xin Jiang Hui Min Hand Made Noodle Restaurant (新疆回民手工拉面) – Burwood NSW Restaurant Review

To take my mind off some disastrous performance in a practice examination, my friend and I had lunch at this Uyghur Chinese restaurant on Burwood Road towards the top of the street where a number of Uyghur restaurants are.  It was a no-fuss, very straightforward ordeal where we chose a number of the most popular options from the menu.

The XinJiang Style Stir fried noodles ($24.80) were quite good with tender beef, noodles that were ‘jin doa’, and a slick of oil coating every single mouthful (but in a delicious manner.) The flavours were good and there was a nice variety of vegetables and a balance of flavours, textures, and components.

The stewed beef with vegetable ($24.80) was delicious and tasty. It came loaded with glass noodles, however it probably would have been good with extra rice, given the sheer quantity of gravy. Despite the fact that some extra rice probably would’ve been optimal, it was however just fine without it, not too salty, and not neccessarily needing a second carb to dilute the flavour. The beef was fatty and flavourful, without too much gameiness or agriculural scent, and the vegetables a mind-trick into pretending we were eating something slightly healthy.

The lamb skewers (4 for $16) were pretty good when they were fresh out of the grill, not too spicy and in fact probably could have actually used a bit more spice. Sadly my friend is a white man and we wonder if that may have affected the amount of spice that was laid onto these skewers, but we wouldn’t want to assume for sure. It’s sad that these skewers did get a bit less appealing towards the end of the meal, once the heat had been radiated away to the environment. It is not physically impossible to avoid degradation of lamb skewer quality throughout the course of a meal, by the application of a heated plate or using a heating element, for example, a candle under a plate, however this was not in practice in this restaurant, or to be fair any other Chinese restaurant I’ve been at. The Koreans have this down though.

Overall
I felt the meal at Xin Jiang Hui Min Hand Made Noodle Restaurant was quite good and quite a reasonable price for the amount of food that we got. We left quite filled and with leftovers that continued to taste good after a trip to the microwave.

I would recommend this restaurant to a friend or colleague.

Synear Pork & Crab Meat Soup Dumpling 思念 冷凍鮮美蟹肉小籠包 – Grocery Review

I went a little off script and bought us xiao long bao from a brand that isn’t the one that we have for years established that my wife loves. These are the pork & crab meat soup dumpling 冷凍鮮美蟹肉小籠包 from Synear 思念, which was obviously always going to be a problem because it’s rare for her to have a seafood and enjoy it.

The instructions on the box were clearly written in English. I scalded my right forearm as I was placing them into the steamer and had to run my arm under water for 15 minutes – the perfect time to cook these XLBs and then let them cool a little before eating.

I did not have any particular adverse feelings about these xiao long bao, though my wife had one and immediately did not want to have any more. They didn’t taste extremely crabby to me, though I did think there was some particulate matter inside them, kind of in the texture of a thin prawn shell (though it must have been something else, as this is not in the ingredients list).

Would I buy again? As a single man, maybe. But as a husband of a woman who hates them, no.
