Ruyee Golden Potstickers with Chives Egg and Dried Shrimp (黃金鍋貼 韭菜鸡蛋虾皮) – Grocery Review

Straight off the heels of having tried the Chive and Egg Dumplings from Ruyee, here are my brief thoughts on their Golden Potstickers with Chives Egg and Dried Shrimp (黃金鍋貼 韭菜鸡蛋虾皮). Dedicated readers do not have to fear, for these quickly jotted down thoughts will not interrupt the usual posting schedule.

These are clearly smaller than the previously reviewed egg and chive pockets. The photo on the packet has them being cooked still stuck together as a batch, though they did not come this stuck together in the packaging.

Though the supermarket I brought them from advertised them as chive, egg, and prawn, I could not appreciate any prawn whilst eating them, and a subsequent a close reading of the packaging revealed that the prawn was only dried prawn.

I’m open to any suggestions about how to de-carbonise the sides of my stainless steel cookware. Barkeeper’s friend doesn’t get rid of all of it, so often I find it’s less drama to just use carbon steel.

All faffing aside, these were only fine. The wrapper to filling ratio I felt was weaker than that of the ‘pockets’, and given the choice of the two I would choose those instead.

Daliyuan Pie 达利园·派 巧克力味涂饰蛋糕 – Grocery Review

I truly cannot believe how terrible this is. It is so dry and crumbly, too sweet, similar in quality to Ülker Halley’s (Turkish) variant, and overall inferior to both competing choco pie products from Orion and Lotte.

The worst part was that I had to buy a whole bag of them. 10 for $6, even more expensive than Lotte, and coming close to Orion prices.

The Chinese domestic market simply cannot compete in some regards, which explains why I’ve never seen this in Australia before now, and will never buy it again.

The Koreans simply do it better.

Best Flavour Dim Sims Australia 精美点心 Pork Bean Curd Roll 鲜竹卷 & Sticky Rice Chicken 糯米雞 – Grocery Review

The initial part of this review is for the Pork Bean Curd Roll 鲜竹卷

I rarely ever do frozen grocery reviews (because of pure laziness), but this was actually pretty good. It is a pack of frozen bean curd roll / 鮮竹捲 / xiān zhú juǎn / sin zuk gyun that was only like $7 or something.

They were simple to steam, and though they came out relatively wet, all I had to do to eat them was fish them out with some chopsticks.

The flavour was quite accurate, the bean curd wrapper was soft, and they were packed with meaty filling.

They’re not a luxury meal, I don’t think they’re much worse than what you would get at yum cha. I’d have them again.

The second part of this review is for the Sticky Rice Chicken 糯米雞
I thought about just adding this onto the existing post about Best Flavour Dim Sims Australia 精美点心’s Pork Bean Curd Roll 鲜竹卷, but felt that restructuring it would be too difficult, as it’s already been published. I will likely come to regret this in the future, as I write reviews for more and more products made by the same companies. That’s a problem for future me, not now me. Amazing, it is a problem for now me after all.

Like the bean curd roll, this lo mai gai is actually also very good, easy to steam at home, and tastes just like the real thing.

The fillings are full of chicken, lap cheung, sticky rice, and a small amount of crispy lotus. The only thing missing is a salted egg yolk, which to be honest isn’t always present at yum cha nuò mǐ jī anyway.

Once again, I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Seaworld Fried Baby Crab Chips 티각태각 꽃게부각

I went out of my way between night shfits looking for some deep fried mini shrimp heads to bring to work, but could only find these deep fried baby crabs.

As deep fried baby crabs go, these certainly did the job. They had quite a nice seafoody umami taste, though were quite oily and would be really at the apex of any food pyramid as a sometimes only treat.

The only bad thing about them is how slightly freaky the little crab bodies look. I recommend first having a few with your eyes closed, so that you can enjoy them before you look at them.

Man Xiao Bao Fat Sauce Ramen (满小饱肥汁拉面) – Instant Noodle Review

Despite all of the effort that I put into reviewing (predominately East Coast) restaurants on this blog, one of the most visited pages on this entire site is this one paragraph review for Uni-President’s King of Tomato instant noodle. I guess if there’s a formula, this works.

Today’s review is about Man Xiao Bao’s Fat Sauce Ramen. There doesn’t appear to be any official English translation for the name, but I think fat sauce, or grease sauce works pretty well.

The packaging is extremely elaborate, with no less than seven individually packed components, consisting of noodles, fried tofu wrapper, dried coriander, ghost chilli powder, bean sprouts in vinegar, more vinegar, meaty greasy sauce, and of course noodles.

The cooking instructions were translated by Google Translate as I’m a bit of a 文盲. Essentially the noodles are cooked separately and drained, then the toppings, then it’s all mixed together. Despite the seven component smorgasbord, the bok choy and egg pictured on the packet was not included, and had to be added separately.

Luckily, I had some bok choy in the fridge, and some of the excellent 78 degree snack eggs from Weilong in the pantry.

Taste wise, I found these noodles to be unfortunately extremely sour. It is probably my fault that I didn’t read the (CHINESE) instructions on the little sauce packets themselves, which if I did I would know that I was meant to adjust the amount to put in by personal preference. Still, I can’t imagine that anyone would want to put all of that vinegar sauce in.

The famed combination of stewed bone soup, fried meat paste, and braised grease sauce, as appetizing as those components once translated into English, were not perceptible to me.

I overall did not enjoy this, despite the journey of putting it all together, and won’t be buying this again willingly.
